The Open-air Film Festival Under the Starry Sky Inspires Us to Set Forth Anew with Courage
In the gentle evening breeze of summer, I bet you were also healed by an animated film in the open air. Indeed, the 2025 Binjiang Property open-air film festival, themed “Pride of China – A Journey of Wonder with Chinese Animation”, truly has a magical healing effect.
“Pride of China – A Journey of Wonder with Chinese Animation”
In recent years, with the rise of Chinese animated films, the audience has gradually expanded to include all age groups. The creative teams behind these animations are increasingly inclined to tell stories about ordinary individuals who bravely confront setbacks, mirroring the countless brave departures of the masses. More and more viewers find resonance with these small characters, empathizing with the spirit of the times.

The combination of “film + outdoor screening” is often a highlight at major film festivals. Open-air films, as a snapshot of an era, extend the movie-watching experience, add a vibrant touch to nightlife, and spark intellectual exchanges among the audience.
While it is a feast to step into theatres to catch the latest releases, open-air film experiences in their diverse forms also bring a unique enjoyment. Although outdoor movies might not always feature the newest releases, they offer a special cinematic experience that grounds us in the present while gazing back at the stars and reflecting on life. It is a bridge that connects the past and present and witnesses the inheritance, innovation, and breakthroughs in the art of cinema.
Open-air Film Festival in Residential Quarters
Through countless summer nights filled with songs of cicadas, Binjiang Property has consistently hosted open-air film festivals, which offer a cinematic cultural journey to meet the diverse needs of its residents. Animation has always been an inseparable and joyful melody in these festivals. In 2025, as the creation and production of Chinese animations are experiencing a vibrant surge, animation once again takes center stage at this year’s open-air film festival. A series of movies tracing the evolution of Chinese animation, including “Nezha II”, “Monkey King: Hero Is Back”, “Chang An”, “Boonie Bears”, “Calabash Brothers”, and “Lotus Lantern”, are screened this summer in residential quarters served by Binjiang Property.

This summer, “Ne Zha”, the director Yong Yu’s first Ne Zha movie, was screened in Hangzhou Golden Coast and drew over eighty residents. In the gentle breeze, the audience, mainly families with children who cheered loudly for Nezha’s adventures, alongside young adults and seniors, enjoyed a good time together. They all recognized the open-air film activity for enriching their nightlife and expressed their expectation for more such events.

“The joy of summer nights lies in the childhood memories hidden in open-air films!” The Hangzhou Castalia Court Xixuan chose to screen “Ne Zha” for the open-air film festival. Thirty minutes before the film started, the air was already filled with the scent of soda and the buzz of excitement. The property management staff remarked that even though cinema screens are getting bigger these days, people still fondly remember the outdoor projection screen set up in the open air and the lively atmosphere of crowding together. It turns out that the most precious happiness has never been about high-tech but rather those moments shared with companions.

“Watching movies right at our doorstep is a fantastic idea. Not only are the kids thrilled, but we are also very excited to relive the happy moments of childhood.” The animated film “Chang An” screened in Hangzhou Lake Villa received great popularity among children, and another animated film “Monkey King: Hero Is Back” screened in Hangzhou Dream Lake also attracted over a hundred residents whose hearts joined the Monkey King on his adventurous journey of redemption. Watching a good movie with delicious food in a convivial atmosphere is one of the greatest joys of life.

In July, “I Am What I Am” was projected in the open air in Yongkang Phoenix City. The joyful faces of children engrossed in the film overlapped with the nostalgic smiles of elders reminiscing about their own open-air film experience. The open-air film, like a long thread, interwove two pieces of time. To ensure that residents enjoy a cool respite as they watch the film, the property management staff also thoughtfully prepared popcorn and refreshing cold drinks and mung bean soup. After the event, the resident left with lingering excitement, already looking forward to the second open-air film night in August.

This year, the open-air film festival made its debut at Elegant Villa in Chongming District, Shanghai, which Binjiang Property began serving in September 2024. The movie chosen for this summer’s open-air film festival, “Boonie Bears: Guardian Code”, attracted nearly one hundred residents. It was not only Elegant Villa’s first time hosting its open-air film festival but also its residents’ first time watching a movie at their doorstep. The property management team received heartfelt gratitude from the residents for organizing the event.

Several residents jointly wrote a letter of commendation, which read, “…During the summer vacation, you thoughtfully arranged a movie-watching event for the kids. We, as parents, feel so gratified to see their smiles while watching the movie. Moreover, the fresh cherry tomatoes, sweet watermelons, and refreshing drinks you provided added an extra touch of delight. It is your dedication, responsibility, and meticulous care that made the summer vacation so meaningful, allowing us to deeply experience the warmth of the residential quarter as one big family.”
Under the starry sky, the open-air film festival rejuvenates and inspires us to face challenges and set forth anew with courage.
