Chinese people welcomed this year’s Dragon Boat Festival on June 7th, 2019, i.e. the fifth day of the fifth lunar month this year. This day, people celebrated this long-anticipated festival in various ways. “Pomegranate trees flower as Dragon Boat Festival is coming; In the air the aroma of rice dumplings and mugwort is spreading…” What was described in Lu You’s Yi Mao Chong Wu Poem reappeared.
On Dragon Boat Festival, people make rice dumplings, hang mugwort and calami on the door, wear traditional Han-style clothes and sachets and colored ropes, and watch dragon boat competitions. Dragon Boat Festival is a significant carrier of Chinese culture with its cultural connotation of commemoration of Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet, whose words in his work Li Sao “The way was long and wrapped in gloom did seem, As I urged on to seek my vanished dream” has inspired Chinese people on the way pursuing truth for thousands of years.
On this traditional festival, scenes such as hanging mugwort, making sachets, and cooking rice dumplings can be seen everywhere in communities under Binjiang Property’s management, and Dragon-Boat-Festival-featured herbal odor became the most harmonious fragrance in these communities.
Golden Dawn
At Golden Dawn Phase I, a rice dumpling making competition started at 9:00AM at the word of command. Participants include both skillful elders and unskilled young people. Despite fine or poor workmanship, everyone had fun in this activity. This is how a proprietor thinks of this activity, “Having rice dumplings is a traditional custom on Dragon Boat Festival. Today’s activity is very meaningful as it gets more proprietors involved in a great traditional cultural atmosphere.”
At Golden Dawn Phase III, proprietors are also organized to make rice dumplings and sachets and draw dragon boats to welcome Dragon Boat Festival. Not only does this event enable proprietors have a better understanding of the connotation of this festival, but it activates the community atmosphere and promotes the relationship between property management staff and proprietors.
The City Star
On June 7th, The City Star held the activity “Dragon Boat Festival Gathers Us in The City Star” to celebrate this traditional cultural festival. The activity official started at 14:00PM. Except for ingredients of rice dumpling, the property management staff also provided mugwort and sachets for proprietors to take back to expel insects and bad lucks. Over 50 proprietors from across the country made rice dumplings of different shapes with their own native characteristics. Property management staff of The City Star was grateful to share this happy and peaceful Dragon Boat Festival with proprietors.
Lake Villa
Lake Villa Service Center carried out “Reed Leaves Bringing Dragon Boat Festival” themed activity on which proprietors would challenge to make rice dumpling and compete each other for prizes. This event has not only promoted traditional Double Fifth culture, but also enhanced neighborhood relationships.
Sunshine Coast
On June 7th, proprietors of Sunshine Coast gathered together like a big family to make rice dumplings, weave colored ropes, make sachets, and paint eggs to celebrate Dragon Boat Festival. Among all activities, the making of sachets and colored ropes is the most lovely. Stewards and proprietors exchanged and discussed with each other, jointly and carefully completed every link and the whole work.
Inmost Palace
At 9:45am on the Dragon Boat Festival, more than a hundred of proprietors participated in the rice dumpling making activity and produced multifarious rice dumplings with 30kg sticky rice and various ingredients that the Inmost Palace Service Center prepared on the eve. Those warm-hearted proprietors also shared their rice dumplings with elderly proprietors and those not participating the activity, showing great neighborhood relations.
Myriad
On June 7th, Myriad Star Phase II had a special Dragon Boat Festival activity. On the morning, proprietors including elders and children gathered together to make rice dumplings and sachets together with ingredients prepared by the property management staff in advance, and enjoyed the joy of Dragon Boat Festival in labor.
River Star
On Dragon Boat Festival, the River Star Service Center had Dragon Boat Festival series activities including sachet and rice dumpling making competitions in order to promote traditional culture and to enhance neighborhood communication. This day, the air of River Star was suffused with the unique aroma of the Dragon Boat Festival.
Sitting around together, elderly aunties discussed producing techniques with each other and produced delicate sachets of various shapes for their friends and family members as it is a traditional custom to wear a sachet on Dragon Boat Festival with the wish to prevent diseases and plagues.
On the rice dumpling making competition, sticky rice, candied Chinese dates, and reef leaves were quickly made into delicious rice dumplings in their hands.
At the end of the event, every proprietor was given some plums that the service center staffs dedicatedly picked within the community. In return, proprietors expressed their thanks to the service center for their efforts to carry forward Dragon Boat culture.
