The property management staff rushed to the fire site immediately after hearing the alarm for rescue, turning knowledge accumulated from daily fire drills into practice.

At 16:05 on March 19th, 2019, the fire alarm controller at New City Square’s monitoring room received the alerting signal of smoke at a shop at F4 of the podium building of Block B. The officer on duty of fire control room notified the patrol Xu Wei to check the situation in a second. As the shop was in its adjustment period and the door was closed, it was dark looking inside through the crack.

But Xu Wei didn’t relax but checked more carefully. Through cautious observing, listening and smelling, he confirmed that there was a little smoke and immediately reported the scene situation to the monitoring room. The order director Hu Gongjun timely contacted the shop owner and its lessor GOME.

While the on-site investigation was still ongoing, the fire alarm controller at the monitoring room again received the smoke alarm at the same position on 16:08 and the smoke was getting heavier.

The order director Hu Gongjun judged based on his experience that something must had happened on the spot and soon reported the situation to the director of service center. Director Ni of the service center immediately set up a temporary command and initiated the fire contingency plan.

The obligatory firefighting team consisting of Hu Gongqun, Zhang Mingyue, Wu Yongjie, Li Biao, Li Kunlun, Zhang Rui, and Xu Wei branched out into two columns respectively led by the captain Hu Gongqun and the deputy captain Li Biao to troubleshoot from the front and the back doors simultaneously.

As the smoke began to spread to the office area at 2nd and 3rd floor inside GOME, the monitoring room instantly started the smoke extraction system. The order foreman Li Lu timely evacuated people at such office area to a safe open space, maintained the order and pacified the crowd.

Considering the urgent situation of the scene, the obligatory firefighting team resolutely break into the hotel with the fire axe after getting the consent of Director Ni. The hotel was filled with strong and heavy black smoke which made people tear and brought certain difficulties to the troubleshooting.

After a while, the team finally found the burning chair at the corner of the stairs, and the deputy captain of the firefighting team Li Biao decisively put out the early fire with the extinguisher.

Having put out the fire, the firefighting team members came out one by one with their faces as black as coal. Nevertheless, they felt gratified that they could protect the safety of proprietors of the building and their property.

Upon the preliminary investigation, it is confirmed that the fire was caused by an unextinguished cigarette butt thrown by a customer of the internet bar on the 2nd floor. This person walked through the exit passageway, entered the back door, smoked there and then arbitrarily discarded the unextinguished cigarette which gradually ignited the chair. Finally, the leaders of GOME showed their thanks to the property management staff for putting out the early fire and avoiding greater losses.

How a person treats an unextinguished cigarette butt reflects the person’s consciousness of civilization and, more significantly, concerns the safety of the society. A beautiful and happy home requires us to develop good living habits and needs joint efforts of everyone.
