On June 10th, the fifth day of the fifth lunar month this year, the traditional Dragon Boat Festival came to meet us again. The whole nation rejoiced in the festive spirit, with the aroma of zongzi permeating the air.

Chinese people pass down the customs of the Dragon Boat Festival year after year, hanging mugwort and calamus at doorways to repel insects and ward off evil, eating zongzi in memory of Qu Yuan, wearing fragrant sachets, and participating in dragon boat races. More and more regions are continuously exploring and showcasing the intangible cultural heritage of the festival, and even in residential quarters the Dragon Boat Festival ritual was fully practiced.

In residential quarters served by Binjiang Property, residents were very active in the Dragon Boat Festival themed community activities organized by the property management staff such as making zongzi, fragrant sachets, and five-colored ropes. The property management staff has done the preliminary preparations for making zongzi and were expecting to witness the zongzi making skills of the proprietors.

Hangzhou Binyao Mansion prepared meat and candied dates as fillings, and the meat ones seemed more popular among proprietors. In Hangzhou Crystal Jade Mansion, the property management staff prepared three types of fillings, including pork belly, candied dates, and red bean paste. A proprietor preferred candied dates very much for its sweetness. What’s more, the yumberries in Crystal Jade Mansion have ripened, and it was the perfect season to enjoy yumberries during the Dragon Boat Festival. The zongzi made by the proprietors themselves and yumberries picked by the property management staff filled proprietors’ hearts with happiness.

On the Dragon Boat Festival this year, the property management staff of Hangzhou Double Bay International City specially prepared a thousand bunches of mugwort, which is even more than last year, so as to better satisfy proprietors’ need for hanging mugwort at their doorways. Over 200 proprietors participated in the zongzi making activity. The property management staff prepared three fillings, namely, meat, candied dates, and red dates. Most Hangzhou people prefer meat-filled zongzi, which is also reflected in the number of people choosing the three fillings. According to the property management service center, this year, the proprietors consciously lined up to make zongzi, which gave them a better experience.

In Hangzhou Lansong’aofu, an enthusiastic proprietor shared his experience of making zongzi, “Fold the bamboo leaves into a funnel shape, fill it with ingredients and press them firmly, and then pinch the two sides tight to wrap it up.” At this zongzi feast, zongzi of various shapes and flavors were made one by one, including triangular, pillow-shaped, and pointy ones, with fillings such as meat, red bean paste, candied dates, and even with no fillings. Many proprietors were very excited to learn zongzi making skills from their neighbors.

Sweet zongzi stuffed with candied dates and salty zongzi stuffed with salted pork belly and duck egg yolk were equally preferred in Yiwu, while proprietors in Shanghai tend to favor meat-filled zongzi. In Shanghai Wisdom Park, the zongzi making competition was in full swing, where skilled proprietors deftly maneuvered the bamboo leaves and swiftly crafted exquisite Shanghai-style meat zongzi one after another.

Similar to the Yiwu people, Ningbo people love salty zongzi stuffed with salted pork belly and duck egg yolk. Jinhua is renowned for its ham, and ham-filled zongzi is also a local specialty. In addition to Zongzi, people in Jinhua also relish mung bean cakes during the Dragon Boat Festival. This year, the proprietors of Jinhua Marqws Mansion made some delicate mung bean cakes with property management staff and enjoyed a refreshing Dragon Boat Festival.

In the regions south of the Yangtze River, it is a tradition to have “Five-Huang” in addition to zongzi during the Dragon Boat Festival. The “Five-Huang” refers to the five kinds of food that all contain the character “黄 (Huang )” in their names, namely, eel, yellow croaker, cucumber, salted duck egg yolk, and realgar wine. The property management staff of projects in Yiwu and Quzhou emphasized that the “Five-Huang” is an indispensable element of the Dragon Boat Festival in the localities as people believe that it can help ward off evil and enhance physical health, so as to ensure a peaceful Dragon Boat Festival.

“Bring me a bunch of mugwort, at the noon of the Fifth day of lunar May.” Mugwort is a popular traditional Chinese medicine in China and is also used to hang at the doorway and make fragrant sachets during the Dragon Boat Festival. The fragrance of mugwort is not only refreshing but also good for health. In Fenghua Nuoshang Mansion in Ningbo and Quzhou Chunjiangyue, proprietors made five-colored ropes and fragrant sachets with the materials carefully prepared by property management staff, which, as the popularity of the national style continues to rise, have become more and more diverse and professional. The meticulously crafted classical Dragon Boat Festival sachets by the proprietors carry people's wishes for health and a beautiful life. The sachets swaying in the wind have become the trendiest item during the Dragon Boat Festival.

Why are we so passionate about the Dragon Boat Festival? It is because it’s an intangible cultural heritage of China and is a poetic festival where people revere nature, commemorate Qu Yuan, share gourmet foods and traditional Chinese medicine culture, and showcase the beauty of Chinese traditions.
